Learners also practise obtaining consent and gathering essential information from patients.
Learn how to safely assess an ill or injured patient using structured primary and secondary surveys. This outcome includes taking vital signs, obtaining a SAMPLE history, assessing pain and making informed decisions based on patient presentation.

Recognise and manage common medical emergencies including diabetic emergencies, asthma, seizures, poisoning, anaphylaxis, sepsis and fainting. Learners also develop the skills to assess and care for patients with altered levels of consciousness.
Develop the practical skills required to manage bleeding, soft tissue injuries, fractures, dislocations, head injuries and shock. Learners also gain experience in immobilisation techniques and the management of serious traumatic injuries in accordance with current PHECC Clinical Practice Guideline
Understand how to assess the severity of burns and electrical injuries, recognise factors that increase patient risk and provide appropriate first aid management using current best practice.
Learn to recognise and manage heat-related and cold-related emergencies, including hypothermia, hyperthermia and submersion incidents, while providing appropriate first aid and ongoing patient care.
Develop the knowledge and skills required to accurately document patient care, complete patient care records, provide effective verbal handovers and understand the importance of confidentiality and GDPR when managing patient information.
Recognise and manage common paediatric emergencies including meningitis, febrile convulsions, asthma, poisoning, allergic reactions and seizures, using age-appropriate assessment and care techniques.
Understand the role of the First Aid Responder during a major emergency, including the principles of ten-second triage and the importance of prioritising patients until emergency medical services arrive.
