The First Aid Responder Refresher (FARR) course is designed for individuals who currently hold a PHECC First Aid Responder qualification and need to renew their certification. Through a combination of practical skills stations, realistic scenarios and classroom discussion, learners revisit the knowledge and techniques required to manage medical emergencies, traumatic injuries and life-threatening situations with confidence. Delivered by experienced instructors, the course focuses on maintaining competence, introducing any updates to current clinical practice guidelines and ensuring participants continue to meet the standards expected of a certified First Aid Responder.

This course is suitable for qualified First Aid Responders whose certification is approaching expiry and who require recertification. It is ideal for workplace first aiders, healthcare professionals, industrial staff, emergency response teams, schools, sports organisations and any employer who wishes to maintain compliance while ensuring staff retain the confidence and practical skills needed to respond effectively during an emergency.

Learning Outcomes


By the end of this course, participants will have refreshed the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to assess and manage a wide range of emergency situations. Learners will demonstrate competence in patient assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator, the management of medical emergencies, traumatic injuries and environmental incidents. They will also reinforce effective communication, patient documentation and safe handover procedures while applying their knowledge during realistic emergency scenarios in line with current PHECC Clinical Practice Guidelines.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Course Content

Refresh the role and responsibilities of the First Aid Responder, including scene safety, patient communication, consent, responder wellbeing and current best practice. Participants will also review any relevant updates to PHECC Clinical Practice Guidelines introduced since their previous certification.

Revisit the structured approach to patient assessment, including the Primary Survey, Secondary Survey, vital signs, pain assessment and obtaining a SAMPLE history. Practical exercises reinforce the systematic assessment process used to identify and prioritise life-threatening conditions.

Refresh the recognition and management of common medical emergencies including diabetic emergencies, asthma, seizures, anaphylaxis, sepsis, poisoning and altered levels of consciousness. Emphasis is placed on early recognition, appropriate intervention and patient-centred care.

Review the assessment and management of serious bleeding, hypovolaemic shock, musculoskeletal injuries, spinal injuries and head injuries. Learners will revisit bleeding control techniques and appropriate care for workplace trauma incidents.

Refresh the management of burns, electrical injuries, hypothermia, hyperthermia and submersion incidents. Participants will revisit assessment techniques and appropriate first aid interventions for these emergencies.

Review the importance of accurate patient documentation, effective verbal handover and GDPR-compliant record management. Learners will complete patient care documentation using realistic scenarios.

Refresh the management of common paediatric medical emergencies together with the principles of responding to a major emergency, including the use of Ten Second Triage.

Consolidate learning through practical skills stations, realistic scenarios and formal assessment. The refresher concludes with the required practical skills assessments, CFR and FAR skills verification, clinical updates and the mandatory multiple-choice examination in line with PHECC recertification requirements

Prerequisites

Participants must hold a current or recently expired PHECC First Aid Responder qualification and be eligible to complete the refresher programme in accordance with current PHECC requirements. If a qualification has expired beyond the permitted renewal period, learners may be required to complete the full First Aid Responder course.
